Synthesis Gas Technology

Our portfolio of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and synthesis gas technologies enables our experienced process engineers to tailor flow sheets so that they are environmentally sensitive, low cost, efficient, safe and reliable processes which optimise the use of customers available feedstocks to produce the desired products.

Conventional steam reforming avoids the need for an associated oxygen plant while enabling the processing of natural gas continuing high levels of carbon dioxide. Where feedstocks with higher hydrocarbons are available the CRG pre reforming process can be used to break these down into a mix of methane, carbon oxides and hydrogen thereby enabling the synthesis gas plant capacity to be increased with the same size steam reformer.

The integrated internal heat recovery design of the Compact Reformer ensures a lower fuel demand to meet reforming heat load requirements and improved overall energy efficiency than conventional steam reforming.  Also the modular build concept results in a smaller footprint area, lower capital cost and reduced construction schedules.

The proprietary Johnson Matthey auto thermal reformer (ATR) and burner design has been in continuous service in large commercial units with air and oxygen as the oxidant for many years.

In combined reforming the benefits arising from the combination of ATR with steam methane reforming are seen particularly with light natural gas or feedstocks without C02.

The Gas Heated Reformer (GHR) is another process intensification device which primarily uses convection rather than radiation as the heat transfer method.  Used in a combined reforming process with ATR it enables the achievement of low steam to carbon ratios beneficial for the gas to liquids process.
